Role summary

Hands-on design engineering for custom power infrastructure products.

Design By Initiative LLC, based in Fayetteville, Georgia, is looking for a South African Design Engineer to support custom sound-attenuated enclosures, E-Houses and related power infrastructure from concept through detailed engineering, production release and manufacturing support.

What you'll work on

  • SolidWorks 3D models, fabrication drawings and technical documentation.
  • BOMs, material specifications, vendor coordination and procurement support.
  • Prototyping, testing, production release and manufacturing support.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and develop custom sound-attenuated enclosures, E-Houses and related equipment from concept through production release.
  • Create accurate SolidWorks models, detailed fabrication drawings and technical documentation.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analysis across structural, thermal and acoustic performance requirements.
  • Optimise designs for cost, lean manufacturing, ease of assembly, durability and sound attenuation.
  • Translate customer requirements into practical, buildable solutions while balancing performance, cost and timeline.
  • Generate BOMs, material specifications and procurement or vendor support documentation.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders through the project lifecycle.
  • Support prototyping, testing, sound performance validation, installation and commissioning where required.
  • Maintain design standards, revision control, calculations and design-process documentation.
  • Work within relevant codes, standards and best practices for power generation equipment and noise control.

Required experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a closely related engineering field.
  • 3+ years of professional design engineering experience in custom enclosures, sheet metal fabrication, equipment packaging or similar products.
  • Strong 3D CAD modelling and 2D drafting ability, with SolidWorks strongly preferred.
  • SolidWorks sheet metal design tools as a strong advantage.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, DFM and lean principles.
  • Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail and project management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication for collaborative engineering work.

Preferred experience

  • Acoustic or noise-control design principles or simulation tools.
  • Structural analysis, FEA, thermal modelling or related simulation software.
  • Generator packaging, switchgear, battery storage systems or renewable energy integration.
  • Hands-on fabrication, prototyping, field installation or commissioning support.
  • Relevant standards and regulations for noise, structural, electrical or power generation equipment.

Remote readiness

  • Reliable fibre internet.
  • Backup power during loadshedding.
  • CAD-capable workstation.
  • Strong English communication.
  • Availability for scheduled online meetings with a US-based team.
